Kajplats had been trading for nineteen years on a street where nobody walks past by accident. Everything they sold, they sold to people who already knew about them, which is a lovely position to be in until the people who know about you start moving away.
We built one thing: a stock list that a person can actually search, sitting under a site that says what the shop is and when it is open. The list updates itself from the till at the end of every day. There is no basket and no checkout, because they did not want one; if you find a book, you reserve it and come in for it, which is the whole point of the shop.
The hardest part was not the code. It was going through nineteen years of category names and agreeing on forty that made sense to a stranger.
